All Kids Playground


"Where All Kids are Special," this is a universally accessible playground for all kids, (2004 winner of the prestigious daVinci Award). It is designed for children of all abilities, including those with special needs. It's built with transfer platforms, ramps & other safety devices. Kids will enjoy imaginative, interactive & dramatic social play.


The playground is located at Hess-Hathaway Park, 825 S. Williams Lake Road in Waterford. Get directions.
Hess-Hathaway Park is the home of Lone Cedar Farms, with animals to visit and year-round family activities.

Children's Advocates

      Court Appointed Guardianship Services are provided by volunteers who work as advocates for children requiring legal guardianship within the Oakland County Family Court System. Advocates are provided periodic In-Service training for help in finding referral services in our community. (Volunteers are not needed at this time.)

Community Outreach: Backpack Project

      This worthwhile endeavor ensures that many homeless students, kindergarten through twelfth grade in Oakland County, are able to enter school in the fall with colorful new backpacks filled with new school supplies. The program is coordinated through Oakland Schools Homeless Student Education Program.

       Volunteers, including children and grandchildren spend two fun-filled days setting up and filling the backpacks. To volunteer for either day or both days call (248) 355-3300, ext. 0

Education Assistance

      Education Assistance provides interest free loans and grants to students needing financial aid to continue and complete their college undergraduate, graduate, or professional studies. Applicants must be full-time students and be able to document their need. They must attend an accredited college or university in Michigan (unless comparable education is not available in state) and demonstrate satisfactory academic progress toward a career goal.

      NCJW/GDS is a participating organization of the Jewish Educational Loan Service (JELS). The JELS program is administered by JVS, Hebrew Free Loan, and the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Detroit. Friendly Visitors to Homebound Adults

      Volunteers are matched with a homebound older adult who is seeking companionship and support. "Friendly Visitors" visit every other week or weekly for 30-60 minutes, by phone or in person. Jewish Family Service directs the program and provides training. Men are welcome!

Jewish Youth Awards

      NCJW/GDS proudly sponsors a community-wide awards program for Jewish high school seniors, recognizing them for academic achievements and community service. All High School Seniors are invited to apply.


Award Ceremony for the Ten finalists was on Thursday evening, April 22, 2010.
The Class of 2010 Winners are: Jacob Allen, Hannah Cohen, Michelle Kappy, Ruth Gila Lehmann, Elizabeth Levine, Rachel Margolin, Avielle Movsas, Zoe Pinter, Erica Sachse, and Hayley Sakwa.

Join a Success Team to help you stay focused on your job search. JVS facilitated meetings in an informal setting will keep you motivated! Learn proven job search techniques, share triumphs, and plan your strategy. Six to eight participants meet weekly for eight weeks.

      This twice-monthly Sunday Brunch program funded by NCJW-GDS provides a variety of enjoyable activities for Kadima clients with chronic mental illness. Interesting and educational field trips, holiday celebrations, and opportunities for social interaction are all part of this supportive program.

Meals on Wheels


      Meals on Wheels provides two nutritious Kosher meals five days a week to those unable to provide for themselves, or have no one to assist them with meal preparation. Meals are packaged and delivered from the kitchen of Jewish Apartments and Services by volunteers of the National Council of Jewish Women, Greater Detroit Section.
If you or someone you know is ...
  • temporarily unable to prepare meals following a hospital stay
  • handicapped and unable to provide meals for themselves
  • homebound without someone in their home to help with meals
  • elderly needing assistance in maintaining independence in their home
       ...then Meals on Wheels is the answer

      We are currently looking for men and women to serve as volunteers in the Meals on Wheels program.       When NCJW/GDS volunteers arrived at Detroit's Coleman Young Elementary School in November, 2008, they were noisily chatting about the presidential election, the books they planned to read to the students and what to talk about with them. They were met by student ambassadors in the school office and escorted to their assigned rooms where enjoyable reading time was had by all. Please say you'll join this years group of volunteers and read to these delightful students.

Ronald McDonald House


      Check back here for the next opportunity for our generous members to provide lunch and dinner to families staying at Ronald McDonald House. It is a chance for us to perform a mitzvah for people at a difficult time in their lives. Safe Place


      Safe Place provides Kosher temporary housing to women and children in need of a place to stay due to domestic abuse situations. This program is in cooperation with Jewish Family Service. Contact Jewish Family Service at 248-592-2300, if you are in need of this service.

      Share Your Soles is an annual used shoe drive for needy children world-wide.  NCJW/GDS works in cooperation with the Share Your Soles organization. Next shoe drive will be in 2010.

      Congregation Shaarey Zedek and the National Council of Jewish Women, Greater Detroit Section-Space for Changing Families offer a six week Bereavement Support Group for individuals who have experienced the death of a spouse or partner.

      The National Council of Jewish Women, Greater Detroit Section--SPACE for Changing Families--is offering a six week bereavement support group for adults grieving the death of a parent. The group is facilitated by Cindy Goldman, MEd, LPC, providing a safe atmosphere for participants to share and discuss the issues involved in grieving the death of a parent.

     This is not a drop-in group, pre-registration required and you need to attend all six sessions. There is no charge, however donations are appreciated.

      This is a well-organized peer support group designed for parents and their children who are trying to adjust to living in a single-parent household, in a stepfamily or to any change in their family life.

Teen Dating Abuse Awareness


Did you know that 1 in 3 teens experience violence in a dating relationship?

THE FACTS ABOUT TEEN DATING ABUSE - A program to raise awareness about Teen Dating Abuse, presented by National Council of Jewish Women, Greater Detroit Section.


Trained facilitators provide programs in schools and synagogues to foster awareness. This program is available to high school students at no charge. If your school, synagogue or youth group is interested to schedule a presentation, please call 248-355-9936 or send email to TDA@ncjwgds.org

      The Council Thrift Shops provide "High End Merchandise without the High End Price."

      Customers can find clothing suitable for job interviews, dressy events, and everyday wear.

Tutoring Elementary School Students ***NEW***

      Starting in the fall of 2010, NCJW/GDS will begin a program to tutor first and second graders in the Detroit Public Schools. Emphasis will be on reading skills. Each volunteer will meet weekly with three students, for one-half hour each. Volunteers are asked to commit to once a week sessions for at least 3 months. Training will be provided to volunteers. Both students and tutors should look forward to a rewarding experience!

Dates: Every Monday, and Second Sunday of the Month (No Sundays in July & August)

Time: 10:00am - 1:00pm on Mondays; 1:00pm - 3:00pm on second Sunday

      Abused and neglected children are removed from their homes every day by Protective Services. They are placed in foster care homes or institutions. The warm and cuddly blankets we make for them ease some of the trauma they are experiencing.

      Your help is so important and it is so easy. Just drop in to the Council office on any Monday, no need to make a reservation. No sewing is involved, just cutting and tying. We provide all the materials, equipment, and even coffee & snacks. Give it a try and bring a friend or two!

      Mitzvah Sunday is an opportunity for children and teens who want to participate in Wrapped in Love for mitzvah credit or community service activity. Bar/Bat Mitzvah students, youth groups, or BBYO are welcome to join as individuals or a group project. But you must call the NCJW/GDS office at (248) 355-3300 ext.0 by the Friday prior to the second Sunday of the month to confirm your participation. No Sundays in July & August, but all ages are welcome to come on Mondays at 10!
