NCJW


Founded in 1891 and inspired by Jewish values, National Council of Jewish Women, Greater Detroit Section (NCJW/GDS) has maintained a progressive stance on issues at the local, state and federal levels.  In a pioneering spirit, members come together to improve the quality of life for women, children and families.  Over 200 volunteers (women and men) take action to provide the following services and support to the community:

The National Council of Jewish Women is a volunteer organization that has been at the forefront of social change for over a century. Inspired by Jewish values, NCJW works to improve the quality of life for women, children and families and to ensure individual rights and freedoms through programs and projects initiated by its network of 90,000 members and supporters nationwide.

SERVICE

Adult Guardianship Review - a liaison to Oakland County Family court system to review assigned adult guardianship cases.

Adventures in Reading - A reading program for elementary school children.

All Kids Playground - a 2004 winner of the prestigious DaVinci Award.  This handicapped accessible playground for all kids is located at Hess-Hathaway Park, 825 S. Williams Lake Road in Waterford.   More Info.

Children's Advocates (Court Appointed Guardianship Services) - advocates for children requiring legal guardianships within the Oakland County Family Court System.

Community Outreach - addresses the needs of disadvantaged and elderly community members.  The Backpack Project annually provides school supplies for children in need.

Community Service - volunteers provide service for various community projects. 

Council Thrift Shops - Over 70 years old.  Sales of donated used clothing, household goods and furniture support our programs and services.  More Info.

Strategies to Prevent Domestic Abuse  includes assisting people who need to complete Personal Protection Orders (PPO's), facilitating educational programs related to teen dating abuse, as well as attending to new issues as they arise. 

Education Assistance - provides interest free loans and grants to Jewish students for undergraduate and graduate study.

Jewish News on Tape - tapes Detroit Jewish News articles for the visually impaired.

Jewish Youth Awards - coordinates the community-wide award program for Jewish high school seniors recognized for their academic achievements and community service.

Life Town at Friendship Circle - assists children with special needs in learning basic living skills and practice goal setting activities.

Meals on Wheels in cooperation with Jewish Family Service - packages and delivers kosher meals to the homebound. More Info.

Project Friendship in cooperation with Kadima - supervises Sunday programs provided for Kadima clients. 

Safe Place in cooperation with Jewish Family Service - provides temporary housing for women and their children due to domestic violence situations.

SPACE for Changing Families - programming for people facing life's challenges including ongoing bereavement and divorce support groups.   More Info.

Teen Dating Abuse Project - facilitates programs in schools to bring awareness of Teen Dating Abuse.

Teen Yellow Pages - a directory developed and maintained by NCJW/GDS focusing on critical topics offering information and contact numbers of services in the community.  More Info.

Up and Out - provides programs and transportation for senior adults in the community.  

Wrapped in Love by NCJW/GDS - creates blankets for children involved with Protective Services. DO YOU NEED MITZVAH HOURS?   More Info. 

Act

Advocacy and Action

Takes action on issues that matter most through programming, letter writing and other advocacy efforts.

State Public Affairs - A committee that plans and implements advocacy issues.  More Info.

Programming

Plans public affairs/education and social programs throughout the year for members and non members.

Sponsorship

Bookstock - sponsor of the annual book sale.

Home Instruction Program for Preschool Youngsters (HIPPY) - funds instruction for home-based schooling of preschool aged children.

Jewish Apartments and Services' Bus - funds transportation for residents to local grocery stores.

The Jewish Community Center Jewish Book Fair - sponsors an author at the annual Book Fair.

The Jewish Community Center Lenore Marwil Jewish Film Festival - supports the annual Film Festival.
